WIP Work in Progress: Charity Baby Quilts

I've been busy making these six baby quilts for Project Linus.  These are tops only and it'll be a while before I get to finish them.  But I'm happy with my progress so far.


MANY years ago, I saw this super cute fabric and knew it'd be perfect for baby quilts.  I loved it so much that I bought several yards in both pink and blue colorways.  


After all this time, I decided it was time to make a few quilts and move the fabric out of inventory.


The first top I made was this Warm Wishes pattern using the blue fabric.  It was a kit I had already cut so it was a quick finish.


I made this second top with more of the blue fabric.  It alternates a 4-patch with a 6" square print.


I had enough blue fabric to make a third quilt, but not enough for all the squares so I used a different fabric for a couple squares.  It alternates a pinwheel block with a 6" square print.  

This fourth top is the first one with the pink fabric.  It has 9 Sawtooth blocks and is my favorite.  The finished sawtooth blocks are 12" and I really enjoyed making them.

By the time I got to this fifth top, I was anxious to finish this baby quilt project and move on.  The brown alphabet print is part of the same line as the pink and blue fabric by Linda Spivey for David Textiles.  I wanted to use it all up so I added the 7 brown squares.  Each of the hourglass blocks and squares finishes at 5".

After all that, I still had some pink fabric, just enough for thirteen 6" squares.  So I scrounged through my scraps to add to those squares and made this small quilt with the Warm Wishes pattern -- the sixth and final top.  After two weeks of sewing these tops, I am so ready to move on to my next project.  I will probably quilt these over the next 6 months and then take the bunch to a drop-off site.  

Upland Vac & Sew

This past weekend, I delivered the batch of 10 charity quilts from last year to a drop-off site that was about 45 minutes from my home.  

Several years ago, I was regularly involved with Project Linus and donated many quilts.  The coordinator for our local chapter lived in my city and it was very convenient.  She eventually moved to another city but there was still a local drop-off site.  Now, 10 years later, I find that the closest drop-off site is over 20 miles away.

    Your quilts are so soft and sweet! Sure to be loved by some one! My old guild used to focus on kids/teenagers quilt so I have quite a bit of youthful fabric. My new guild's focus is QOV. Not sure what I'm going to do with my youth fabric...guess it will just age until I have grandkids?

    What wonderful quilts for such a good purpose. I used to donate quilts regularly to Project Linus, but the drop off person changed and I never did find the new location. Thank you so much for adding these lovelies to my linky party this week ... :) Pat

Tutorial: Fold and Turn Coasters

These fold-and-turn coasters are SO easy and fun to make!  I first saw this pattern in 2002 at a guild meeting, and the instructions were handwritten.  There were no pictures … only hand drawings.  Well, we’ve come a long way in 8 years! I made this set of 4 coasters to include with the potholders I made for Amy’s Potholder Pass #2 . These coasters were made with five 5-inch cotton squares and one 5-inch flannel square.  These can also be made in other sizes so long as the squares are equal-size.  Suggested square sizes range from 4-1/2” to 6” … your choice.  You may also use one 5-inch batting square, but I found batting was a tad too thick.  But, again, your choice. Instructions: (1) Y ou will choose three different fabrics.  Two fabrics will be used for the top of the coaster and one will be used for the bottom (backing).  I chose the light blue for the bottom: (2) Cut fabric to the desired square size.  I used 5” squares. Weekly Finish #13: Halloween No Point Stars 2020

  I previously posted about my Halloween No Point Stars top and I am happy to say that I finally finished the quilt ... just in time for Halloween! I used a polyester snow blanket remnant for the batting.  Yes, a snow blanket used for Christmas villages.  This was not originally intentional.  I didn't want to use Warm & Natural as I was not going to use this as a "blanket" but rather as a display/decoration.  I wanted a lightweight batting so I looked through my bin of batting remnants and found what I thought was just right. As I was basting the quilt, I noticed some glitter - not much - just a tiny bit on the "batting".  It finally dawned on me why it felt a little different!  How did this snow blanket get mixed in with my regular batting remnants?  Anyway, I was already halfway done so I decided to go with it. Weekly Finish #9: Picket Star RSC 2022

Picket Star RSC 2022   Finished Size:  84" x 101" I finished the top for this quilt last year and posted about it here .  The pattern is Picket Star by Sew Preeti Quilts .  I have enjoyed reading her blog for a couple of years and love her patterns. Sew Preeti was so generous to provide a free tutorial to make this block that she used for the 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  She made 9 blocks for her RSC quilt which finished at 53" square. She also made two beautiful larger quilts with 20-30 blocks, and I decided I would use the Picket Star block for my 2022 Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I made 30 blocks for my quilt over the course of 6 months, a different color for each month.  The block is 17", a nice larger size that is fast and easy to complete. I used a simple quilting design that was pre-installed in the Pro-Stitcher Lite called Apple Leaves.
