Wild Deer Rag Quilt #334  Size: 64" x 72" Started 12/15/23 - Finished 12/20/23 In early December, DH asked me to make a quilt as a gift for a good friend.  My first reaction was "No way, Jose!" I was working on projects I hoped to finish by the year's end. Front Years ago, I made several rag quilts, which were quick and easy.  I remembered I had two bolts of flannel fabric that I bought at a thrift store, and I also had a rag-square die for my cutter.  Bingo!  I figured a soft and warm flannel "blanket" would be more suitable. Back It took me 5 days to complete this quilt, and DH was able to gift it a few days ago.  This is my final quilt for 2023. Back of quilt Making this rag quilt reminded me how much fun they are to make.  And, of course, the die with the cutter makes it so much faster.  I'm planning to make a few in 2024 to donate to Project Linus, as I have a couple more bolts of flannel. Northwind Block 2023 Stash Buster Quilt #333 Size: 80" square Started 2/22/23 - Finished 12/14/23 I previously posted about this top here .  The annual challenge by Border Creek Station starts January 1, which is to make 1 block a week.  At the end of the year, you will have enough blocks to make a large quilt. I didn't start making the blocks until February and thought I'd make just enough blocks to "catch up".  But once I started, I couldn't stop, and by March I had made 64 blocks - enough to meet the challenge. I used an 8 x 8 layout, and each block is 9" finished.  I used some really old and ugly fabrics, and I wasn't sure I would like the quilt.  But now that it's quilted and completed, I love it! I quilted it with a dark brown thread and an E2E design called Curls and Pearls.  I wish I had used a lighter brown, but I used what I had on hand.  The backing is a cotton sheet, and the batting is Warm & Natural.   And a label completes the q...

Warmth of Our Stars Quilt #332   Size:  84" square Started 7/18/23 - Finished 10/31/23 I LOVE this quilt!  It is definitely one of my favorite quilts. This quilt was designed by Scott Flanagan and was featured in Love of Quilting magazine as a 6-part series.  It is mainly strip piecing and was easy to put together.  It is so simple but so elegant and beautiful! Earlier this year, I was invited to my cousin's birthday party for her 80th birthday in November.  Of course, I had to make her a special quilt.  When I saw this design on social media, I knew it was just right for my cousin, who is a stellar musician and used to be a Folklorico dancer. The original pattern uses a plain border or piano keys as an alternate border.  I preferred the pieced border, but needed more time for one.  Luckily, I had this striped fabric in my stash, which was perfect. Chilhowie 2023 Mystery Quilt #331 Size:  77" square Started 12/5/22 - Finished 10/20/23 This is my fifth Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, which I started in December 2022.  I actually kept up with the clues and finished the top in January.  I previously posted about my Chilhowie top here . Now that the new mystery is around the corner,  I thought it was time to finish my Chilhowie mystery quilt  I'm not very good at picking color combinations, especially when the design is a mystery, so I keep Bonnie's colors.  This color combination was way out of my comfort zone, but I love it. Most of the fabrics are from my stash, but I did have to buy additional fabric as these are not colors I normally use.  This quilt is a bit smaller than the previous mystery quilts, but it still has plenty of small pieces! What Cancer Cannot Do Quilt #330 Size: 42" x 53" Started 8/21/23 - Finished 9/12/23 About a month ago, a dear friend contacted me to let me know that she had been in the hospital for a stem cell transplant due to having contracted myeloma.  I couldn't visit with her as she had to remain isolated for a couple of months.   Not knowing when I'd be able to give it to her,  I made this quilt not only to give her some comfort but to also give me some comfort as I made it. In my research, I discovered that red is the color of a blood cancer ribbon.  I found plenty of fabric with pink ribbons, but none with red ribbons.  The best I could find was a print with pink ribbons on a red background.  I also used a dark red fabric in some of the blocks.   But more important are the inspirational quotes in defiance of cancer.  I hope she is inspired and comforted by these words and knows that this quilt is full of love and hugs. “I may not be able to cha...

Vintage Churn Dash Quilt #329 Size:  79" x 94" Started 11/30/22 - Finished 9/10/23 I finished the top for this quilt in May and posted about it here .  This is a re-creation of an old vintage top I found in the wild. This is the original top, and the big hole with burned edges can be seen in the picture.  Originally, I thought I'd take it apart and salvage what I could, but instead decided to re-create it. There are 30 Churn Dash blocks, and each block is 12" finished.  The yellow sashing and borders are 3" finished. I found some red calico fabric in my stash that I thought was perfect. And, in an effort to keep with the original quilter's design, I used a mix of solid and printed fabric for the backgrounds. I used the Springtime Waltz E2E quilting design from My Creative Stitches.  I love the little bird and butterfly.  So springy! Jelly Roll Sizzle Quilt #327  Size: 55" square Started 7/28/23 - Finished 9/6/23 I don't know why, but a few years ago, I bought 2 "wine" jelly rolls from Joann's.  The rolls were stored away and put on the back burner until this year, when I saw the free FQS Jelly Roll Sizzle pattern by Pat Sloan.  I previously posted a picture of the top here . I wanted the pinwheels to stand out and considered red, but thought it would blend too much with the red strips, so I went with a dark green.  After completing the top, however, I regretted not going with the red or even black pinwheels. The border fabric is from my stash.  I thought the green grapes would fit right in with the "wine" theme of the blocks. I used the Field of Flowers E2E quilt design from PSL.  The backing is yardage from my stash, and the batting is pieced from leftover pieces of Warm & Natural.
