  Last year, DH and I went on the Southern California Quilter's Run.  H e enjoys it as much as I do and I appreciate that he does all the driving.   It had been a few years since our last run, and  we were a little disappointed  there weren't as many participating quilt shops this time.   One of the shops showcased this quilt, and it really caught my attention.  I bought just the pattern as I have plenty of Halloween fabric. The pattern is Patchwork Jack by Pieced Just Sew. The pattern was very easy to make with squares and a few half-square triangles. I was hoping to complete it by this Halloween but that didn't happen.  There's always next year so for now it's going to the "to be quilted" pile.   I made this lap-size quilt using Red Rooster's In Full Bloom fabric and their free PDF pattern .  I had a small bundle from the collection but had to include fabric from my collection. I saw this in a quilt magazine and I just wanted to make it.  I couldn't find the dark floral border and used the light border fabric instead.  I don't care for it as much so it'll be a donation quilt.  For now, it's going into the "to be quilted" pile. I made this second top from a kit I purchased online from Villa Rosa Designs.  The designer highlighted (promoted) it during a Live Sales video and I really liked it.  But I'm not so sure now.  Hmmm, maybe once I quilt it?  Most likely another one to be donated. I made this quilt top from Pat Sloan's Quilters Stand for Ukraine pattern. And,  I previously made two small wall hangings with one block and posted about each  here  and  here .      Each block measures 18" and the top has 12 blocks.  The center star is made from fabric with a sunflower print, the sunflower being the national flower of Ukraine.  I'm not sure if I will add a border, but for now, it's in my "to be quilted" pile. My first two finishes of 2023 even if they are only tops.  And so the fun begins! This top is Chilhowie, Bonnie Hunter's 2022 mystery quilt.   The colors orange, purple, and aqua are Bonnie's and out of my comfort zone.  But this was a mystery and I couldn't envision another color scheme so I stayed with these colors. I was unsure that I would like this colorway but now that the top is finished I love it! And I must say that with so many small pieces the pattern begins to get tiresome as I get closer to the finish.  So I am super happy this is finished for now.  I still need to get backing fabric and I plan to finish it before the next mystery. The second finished top is one I'm making for my daughter.  After I made the Raiders Quilt for my SIL, I offered to make a quilt of her favorite team for her birthday this month.   This is a wedding quilt I am making for my neighbor's daughter.  We have been neighbors for 26 years, and I saw Makenna grow up from a toddler to a beautiful young lady, who recently graduated with a doctorate in pharmacy. When we found out early this year that Makenna was getting married, my DH suggested a wedding quilt was in order, and I happily agreed.  Luckily, I had plenty of time as the bridal shower was not until January 2023. As the months went by, I looked for a pattern that was just right.  Being a young woman, Makenna might like a "modern" quilt, but I breathed a sigh of relief when she told me she liked an "old lady look".  I certainly knew what that was! I decided to go with one of my favorite blocks for wedding quilts: the Single Wedding Ring.   I made this small wall-hanging top from Kim Diehl's Tenth Simple Whatnots Club.  It only measures 21" square and I finished it in 2 days. I purchased the stand-alone kit last year from the Fat Quarter Shop ... and somehow I ended up signing up for the eleventh annual Simple Whatnots Club.  There are eight kits and I received my last one in August.  So far I have completed zero.  I'm not sure I'll ever finish all of them.  I may pull the fabric and add it to my stash for another project.  I may even gift a couple to my quilting friend.   The backing and binding were included in the kit so I'll be able to finish it quickly.   After putting this top aside so I could make a Sisterhood quilt for my sister , I finally made enough blocks to finish it. I started making this quilt in June and originally planned to make a lap sized quilt with only 32 blocks and no border, just binding. Once I assembled the top, I decided I wanted to make it bigger so I cut out more blocks.  Well, they were then sidelined until my sister's quilt was finished. An additional 22 blocks later, and my top is finished.  I added the blocks without considering size and didn't realize how big it would be.  It's one of my bigger tops measuring at 88" x 102". Between my sister's quilt and mine, I have made 84 sister blocks.  As much as I love making these ladies - they are so easy and fun to make - I'm done for now.  The top is now added to my "to be quilted" pile.   Last month's RSC color was orange; and after making the 6 Red Cross blocks, I had enough blocks (32) to assemble the center of the top. Setting triangles, a 1-1/2 inch inner border, and a 4-1/2 inch outer border complete the flimsy.  I think setting the blocks on-point adds a nice visual design.  Thank you to The Academic Quilter for the Red Cross block tutorial and quilt inspiration . I was also able to complete this top after making the 9 orange blocks.  This pattern is Catching Rainbows by Bonnie Hunter @ Quiltville. Bonnie made string blocks for her quilt, which I think looks great.  However, I wasn't eager to make these so I just used scrappy squares.  I love it! For now, they are in my pile of flimsies to be quilted.  I may or may not get to these 2 before the end of the year.  Hard to believe that the year is almost over and the holidays are just around the corner!   I am so excited to get my orange blocks done for the August Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I was so excited, in fact, that I couldn't wait to get started on my two quilt tops.  Of course, I forgot to take a picture of the 9 Jack Knife blocks before assembling the rows.  So I took a picture of one block to represent all 9.   This is a top for a quilt I'm making for DS#2 as a gift for his graduation from the UCLA paramedic program next month. I bought the fabrics last year, and all the prints are related to emergency medical services. I searched the Internet and Pinterest for ideas and found this quilt as inspiration. I didn't have a pattern so I just winged it and came up with these 2 blocks. My floor became my design "wall" and I created blocks as I went along.  Sort of like putting a puzzle together.
