WIP Work In Progress: St. Patrick's Double Irish Chain

One of my 2021 quilting goals is to make a St. Patrick's Double Irish Chain quilt.  It was supposed to be my March project but it was put on the back burner when we started working on our landscaping.  I thought I'd postpone it to 2022 but since I've had the fabric "kit" for a couple of years, I'm just going to complete the top this year then add it to my UFO pile.  I'll complete the quilt for next year's St. Patty's holiday.

I was originally going to use a pattern from Fons & Porter but decided to go with this one from the August 2000 American Patchwork & Quilting magazine.

It's all strip cutting and sewing, and I used my Accuquilt GO cutter to cut all the strips over the weekend.  Fast and easy.  The unfinished blocks measure 10.5" and there are 35 blocks.  So far, I've completed four.  Not a lot of progress but it's a start.

To be honest, I'm not very thrilled with the colors.  I think the solid greens are too dark for the green shamrocks, but maybe once the top is finished I'll like it better.

  3. You're getting a good jump start on this to enjoy it in March. As for the dark green, use a light thread for quilting to tone it down.

  4. A shamrock fabric field in an Irish chain is a lovely idea for a quilt. I did notice that the chain colors looked very bold, but thought that was your intention. That the shamrocks were meant to recede. Maybe if you use lighter green thread to quilt the chains, you might like the dark green better? Just a thought. I am looking forward to seeing how this finishes. Thank you for joining in my linky party fun ... :) Pat
