Weekly Finish #13: Dandy Star Stash Buster Quilt

Dandy Star Stash Buster Quilt

Another finish and another happy dance!  I started this quilt back in July when I decided to do the stash buster challenge by Border Creek Station.

I love, love, love how this quilt turned out.  I previously posted about my progress here and here.

I was originally going to add a border similar to this quilt that inspired me but I decided my quilt didn't really need it.  I am so glad I added the inner ribbon border instead.

Each Dandy Star block is 9 inches and, except for the backing, the entire top was made from scraps and yardage in my stash.

This is the second top I quilted on my Moxie.  I am a little embarrassed to post this picture.  My quilting was done free-hand (no pantographs, boo hoo) and I decided to get fancy by doing a flower motif.  No prior practice, I just jumped right in, so my quilting is very "rustic" LOL.  It's not perfect, but the last pass is better than the first and it just takes practice.  I also knew that once it was all said and done, it would all be okay.

The backing has a peppermint candy print and I also used this same print for the binding.  The batting is my favorite Warm & Natural, and the quilt measures 72" x 90".

I just finished binding it today so I haven't washed it yet.  I'm pretty sure some of this red fabric is going to bleed and I'm afraid that not even using several color catchers will help.  So I did a Google search and found a post by Confessions of a Homeschooler on How to Prevent and Fix Fabric Bleed.  It's a great article and I hope I don't need it, but just in case ...

This is my "new" quilting studio.  It is our upstairs family/bonus room which is twice the size of the small bedroom I was previously using.  I love the extra room but I don't have a big closet for storage and the lighting is horrible.  Not only are there only 2 windows but also there are no ceiling lights. I toyed with the idea of purchasing the light bar from Handiquilter.

Then, a couple weeks ago, the retailer that sold me the Moxie contacted us to tell us the "light bar" had arrived and we could pick it up at the store.  What? I don't remember purchasing a light bar.  Turns out that the light bar will be included as a bundle during the 2022 Road to California Quilt show next month.  And, Handiquilter or the store (not sure which) decided to include it as part of my bundle.  How awesome is that?!  Woohoo!  We still plan to install ceiling lights but it'll be sometime next year.

  6. Another beautiful finish. Only 2 windows? My room has 1 window and the previous room had none. We live in an earth home and lighting is so bad!! Not attractive, but I purchase led shop lights for my room and they are amazing, in fact I am going to add at least one more for a total of 4. That is so awesome on the lights for the machine. Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down.

    1. Lighting is so important in a quilting studio. Good lighting is more important than being attractive and I even considered shop lights as an option before I knew about the light bar. Thank you for the comment and visit!

  7. How lucky are you--a free lighting bar? Sounds like a great solution for the lack of light. Love your quilt! So pretty and that peppermint binding and backing is perfect! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss. Merry Christmas.

  8. The Dandy Star quilt is truly gorgeous. The borders add so much. Much better than just adding a plain border strip! Perfect.
